What Is Ping and Jitter?
Ping is the time, in milliseconds (ms), it takes for data to travel from your device to a server and back. Jitter is how much that time changes from one moment to the next. Both matter most for gaming, video calls and live streaming.
What is a good ping?
| Ping | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Under 20 ms | Excellent |
| 20–50 ms | Good for gaming and calls |
| 50–100 ms | Usable, small delay |
| Over 100 ms | Noticeable lag |
What is a good jitter?
Under 15 ms is great. Between 15 and 30 ms is acceptable. Above that, voices can cut out and games can stutter, even if your download speed is high.
How to improve ping and jitter
1. Use an Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi.
2. Stay close to the router, or use the 5 GHz band.
3. Pause downloads and streaming on other devices while testing.
4. Restart your router.
5. If it stays high, contact your internet provider.
